Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is one of common hormonal disorders in women at reproductive age and is defined by irregular menstrual cycles and hirsutism (excessive facial or body hair) and presence of small cysts in ovaries. Not all the features are necessarily present in an individual patient. Patients with PCOS produce higher level of androgen (male hormones) compare to normal women. The hormonal irregularity will interfere with normal egg maturation and leads to menstrual irregularity and infertility. In addition these patient may have insulin resistance, which will lead to weight gain and obesity and increases the risk of developing diabetes mellitus. It is also known that patients with PCOS have higher risk of uterine cancer and sleep apnea.
If you have two or more of the following symptoms, consider evaluation by an endocrinologist for confirmation of condition and care.
  • Irregular or absent menstrual periods.
  • Infertility
  • Excess or unwanted body or facial hair growth.
  • Thinning hair on the scalp.

  • Acne on the face, chest, and back.
  • Skin tags
  • Darkening and thickening of the skin around the neck, groin, underarms, or skin folds.

Menopause is a natural part of a woman's life and presents with irregularity and less often periods till eventually completely ends.  However if it occurs before age 45 years considered early menopause and if it happens before age 40 years is premature menopause, which needs evaluation and treatment, otherwise brings other health concerns. Menopause is challenging both emotionally and physically, however this transition usually takes 4-5 years to complete and level of sex hormones especially estrogen gradually declines while it also can fluctuates during this period.

The common symptoms are:
  • Hot Flashes
  • Mood swings
  • Low libido (sexual desire)
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Decline in bone density and progression to osteoporosis
  • Increase risk of hear disease

If you are experiencing theses symptoms, consult with your endocrinologist or you gynecologist to assist you with life style changes and hormonal and/or non-hormonal options which will help you during this transition and improve your overall health and well being.
